THE QUESTION OF INDONESIA CALLING

This was raised at the Annual General Meeting by a member of the Society. The retiring President., Mr. W.J. Scott, outlined the course of the Society's investigations about this film. The most recent development was a letter from the Censor in reply to a letter the Society wrote to the Prime Minister asking under what Act or Regulations he had instructed the Censor to hold over the release of Indonesia Calling.

The Censor's letter stated that he had, under the powers vested in him, withheld the release of the film. When a motion was put that the Society pursue the matter further, some opposition was voiced on the grounds that the film might be only an inflammatory piece of propaganda. Another speaker from the floor pointed out that the film was directed by Joris Ivens, from whom it was unlikely a film would issue which was devoid of some artistic merit. The motion was passed without a dissenting voice, though it was, perhaps, not quite clear whether the Society should contest the censorship on general arguments against censorship or attempt to secure from the Censor permission to exhibit the film to the Society on the grounds of its presupposed artistic qualities. On the latter ground it is interesting to note that Indonesia Calling was one of the films selected for screening at the recent International Documentary Film Festival, the first of its kind, held recently in Scotland under the auspices of the British Council.
