FEDERATION CONFERENCE

The 19th Annual Meeting of the Council of the New Zealand Federation of Film Societies Inc., held in Wellington in January 1965, was attended by delegates from twelve Societies from Auckland to Timaru, as well as by another dozen observers and the officers of the Federation. The conference was opened by Mr. D. C. McIntosh, Censor of Films. The President, Mr. Campbell Smith, of Hamilton, chaired the meeting.

On behalf of the Working Committee, Mr. J. E. Blennerhassett presented a report which he said gave him no pleasure. It was the usual melancholy tale of vexation and frustration: the long and involved proceedings to secure an adequate film supply, including the difficulties and delays in obtaining import licences; the many months of delay and the many hours of extra work that have been the only result of the creation of the Queen Elizabeth II Arts Council; the obtuse and unhelpful attitude of education officers towards screen education; suspension of the Federation's publication, Newsreel, because of lack of manpower. In spite of all this, the Federation did, after a struggle, secure a good selection of films for 1965, and at the end of the year still had a little in the kitty.

Discussion of remits produced nothing very controversial, and the remits carried did little to change the status quo. Offers to act as host for the next conference were received from three Societies and, when put to the vote, the offer from Timaru was accepted.

An innovation, on the social side, was the screening of two films made by members of the Gisborne Film Society. They were made on a shoestring budget; Dr. Allingham, the author of one of the stories, explained sadly that he had received no fat fee for the screen rights. Several delegates must have gone home from this session with the intention of taking a census of movie cameras owned by members of their own Societies.
