Talks Begin On Censorship Laws

The Federation of Film Societies has had its first meeting with the new Minister of Internal Affairs, Mr Highet, about New Zealand's film censorship system.

As a result of the remits from the last two Annual Conferences, the Federation is seeking:

1. More information on censorship

2. No cutting of R 18 films

3. No censorship of film society material

Mr Highet gave an assurance that he did not have a closed mind on the censorship issue and after listening to the Federation's case, he suggested further talks between the Federation, himself and the Censor. These talks should begin soon.

"A very useful and important precedent was set at our meeting with Mr Highet," says the Federation's President, John Reid, who led the delegation.

"A dialogue is now possible between the Film Censor, the Department, the Minister, and Film Societies - who surely are the most appropriate group to represent informed public opinion on the matter of censorship." The Minister expressed interest in the future of film censorship and indicated that he, like the Film Censor was prepared to make himself available to discuss all points of view.
