GARDEN OF EDEN

The Cinematograph Films Appeal. Board certainly moves in a mysterious way. The latest film to be refused a certificate of approval by the Film Censor (Mr G. Mirams) is the nudism novelty Garden of Eden. A trade appeal to the Board was, however, upheld.

Some time ago the censor passed the fitm One Summer of Happiness for screening for adults only and from this it is possible to assume that he has a fairly liberal attitude towards nudism if it is handled in a tasteful manner.

Writing in the  film magazine The Hollywood Reporter, Jack Moffitt states that Garden of Eden was produced in a sunbathing camp in Florida. It tells of a business tycoon who, unwittingly, goes to the camp. He continues: "The French courts held, a few years ago, that it was a greater act of friendliness and kindness to show one's posterior than one's face, which according to the Parisian jurists, is apt to become more weather beaten and less lovely because of constant exposure to the elements. By French law, then, this is an extremely friendly picture." Jack Moffitt finished his review of the film with a credit to the make-up man, Eddie Senz, who, he said, covered a lot of territory.

When released - if it does get release in this country, and that seems to be questionable at this stage - it will be interesting to see what public reaction will be in light of past events. Another rather odd thing about this film is that even though the censor did not think it was fit for release at all in this country, the Appeal Board later saw fit to give it a "general exhibition" release.

The members of the Cinematograph Films Appeal Board are: Mr A.A. McLachaln S.M., Mrs B. Read and Sir William Appleton.
