In opening, David Lindsay, vice-president of the Welligton Film Society, on behalf of the host society, said: I welcome you to htis conference of the NZ Federation of Film Societies. I'm sorry that the date clashed with the Cricket, but the cricket authorities did not check with us first!
The Wellington Film Society, as most of you will know, is the largest in the country. Last year our membership was over 2600. Our members, on the whole, look to us as a source of alternative cinema fare. As such, we have lost much of the closeness which is a feature of the smaller societies. But we hold our members together with a good and varied programme, an informative magazine (even if I say so myself!), and our annual film festival.
Our magazine, Sequence, we send to all film societies for their use and information - it is available as an additional source of material about the films and so on. Wellington is conscious of the support its membership gives to the Federation - probably about a third of it funding - but it is also aware of the support required by the smaller societies and assists in every way possible.
We are pleased to see you all here today to debate the present and future of the Federation and trust that you will return to your home towns fired up with enthusiasm to make your own film society even better. To officially open the conference, I now call on Fran Wilde, the new member of Parliament for Wellington Central.
Following Fran Wilde's address, the President of the Federation chaired the Conference, beginning with his own report:
PRESIDENT'S REPORT - 1981 YEAR
CHAIRMAN'S REPORT - 1981 YEAR
SECRETARY-PROGRAMME DIRECTOR'S REPORT - 1981 YEAR
There folowed discussion on the reports, the treasurer's report, remits, and the Task Force Report. The meeting concluded with General Business and closed at 6.00pm.
